What is a Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Calculator?

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government savings scheme launched in 2015 under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme. It is specifically designed for the financial future of the girl child in India.

SSY offers the highest interest rate among all small savings schemes — currently 8.2% per annum — with complete tax exemption (EEE status). Every middle class Indian parent with a daughter should consider SSY as a core savings vehicle for education and marriage expenses.

How is it calculated?

SSY interest is compounded annually:

Balance = Previous balance + Annual deposit + Interest
Interest = (Previous balance + Annual deposit) × 8.2%

Key SSY rules:
• Account can be opened for girls aged 0-10 years
• Deposits for first 15 years only (account continues to earn interest for 21 years from opening)
• 50% partial withdrawal allowed when girl turns 18 (for education)
• Full maturity at 21 years from account opening
• Tax: EEE — deposit (80C), interest (tax-free), maturity (tax-free)

Government-backed: Zero credit risk — backed by sovereign guarantee
Partial withdrawal: 50% for girl's higher education from age 18
Marriage use: Can be closed after girl turns 18 for marriage expenses

Frequently asked questions

How much will SSY give for a girl born today?
If you invest ₹1.5 lakh/year from birth for 15 years at 8.2%, the maturity amount at age 21 will be approximately ₹69-72 lakh. This can cover college education and marriage expenses comfortably.
Can I open SSY in post office or bank?
Yes — SSY accounts can be opened at any authorised bank (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, etc.) or post office with the girl's birth certificate, guardian's KYC documents, and minimum ₹250 deposit.
What if I miss a year's deposit?
The account becomes irregular but can be regularised by paying the minimum ₹250 due for missed years plus a ₹50 penalty per year. The account will not be closed for non-payment.
Can NRIs open SSY accounts?
No. SSY is only for resident Indian girls. If the girl becomes an NRI after the account is opened, the account can be continued until maturity but no new deposits can be made.
